Snow Geese coming to the fields near Pungo Lake are usually predictable this time of year. They arrive in the late afternoon, feed until dark, and then return to the lake for the night. One thing that is not predictable is the number of people and cars lined up on the road to watch and photograph the birds. On this day, I got there a little late and I approached from the side where the Snow Geese were backlit as they landed. The light shining through their feathers glowed as the sun sank lower in the western sky. Rather than join the crowd (and end up with images similar to everyone else) I positioned myself to take advantage of the backlighting. I had the perspective all to myself and stayed until the light faded for the day.
